AirPods 5 vs AirPods Pro 3: Is Open-Ear ANC Good Enough to Save $100?

News Room

Noise cancellation no longer requires paying AirPods Pro prices.

AirPods 5 start at $129 with Active Noise Cancellation, keeping Apple’s open-ear fit while undercutting the $249 AirPods Pro 3 by $120. The new earbuds are available for preorder and reach stores Sept. 18.

The trade-off is isolation. Apple says AirPods Pro 3 cancel substantially more noise, while also offering longer battery life and health features that AirPods 5 lack. For hybrid work and everyday commuting, the question is whether those advantages justify another $100 to $120.

AirPods 5 bring ANC to Apple’s least expensive earbuds as part of its broader 2026 product lineup, but the Pro model still has a sizable advantage in noisier environments.

Open-ear ANC still has limits

AirPods 5 retain an open-ear design, while AirPods Pro 3 use silicone tips in five sizes. The Pro design creates a tighter acoustic seal, adding passive isolation alongside electronic noise cancellation.

Apple says AirPods 5 remove up to 50% more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC, while AirPods Pro 3 provide up to three times more ANC than AirPods 5. Both figures come from Apple testing conducted under the IEC 60268-24 standard.

In its AirPods Pro 3 review, The Verge reported strong noise reduction on airplanes and at concerts. Comparable retail-unit testing of AirPods 5 is still pending ahead of the Sept. 18 release.

The $149 AirPods 5 add wireless charging, on-stem volume control, and a Find My speaker over the $129 model.

AirPods Pro 3 last up to eight hours with ANC on a charge and up to 24 hours with the case. That makes them better suited to long flights, extended commutes, and workdays without convenient charging breaks.

The Pros also add heart-rate sensing during workouts, plus Hearing Test and Hearing Aid features in supported regions. AirPods 5 do not offer those health features.

Both lines support Adaptive Audio, Transparency, Personalized Spatial Audio, and Live Translation on compatible Apple devices. Ecosystem fit still matters: a recent AirPods Pro 3 and Galaxy Buds4 Pro comparison found that many higher-end earbud features depend heavily on the phone platform they are paired with.

The $149 AirPods 5 are the better value for users who prefer an open fit and mainly need noise reduction for offices, calls, and everyday commuting. Workers who spend more of the day in meetings should also weigh microphone performance and device switching, two factors that can matter as much as ANC when choosing earbuds for work calls.

AirPods Pro 3 still make the stronger case for frequent flyers, long listening sessions, and consistently noisy environments. AirPods 5 narrow the gap enough to make open-ear ANC a credible everyday option, but not enough to erase the Pro model’s advantage where isolation matters most.
