- Eerie new Backrooms themed doors have been spotted around the US ahead of the movie’s release
- The photos were shared by fanpage The Backrooms Online via Instagram
- Backrooms arrives in theaters on May 29, 2026
Backrooms is one of the many new movies to look forward to in May, and fans have stumbled across some excellent, but very creepy marketing out in the wild.
I’m a huge fan of how horror movies find ways to freak out their audiences long before they’ve even seen the movie. Recently I was impressed by Weapons‘ viral marketing, which created a fake missing persons website to grab people’s attention.
Since Backrooms is essentially an alternate dimension that’s similar to our own, they’ve really pushed the boat out and started freaking fans out by placing fake doorways in real-life liminal spaces, which an Instagram post described as “overlooked corners, alleyways, and blank architectural spaces”.
Check out the creepy new photos below.
If you spot any of these strange doorways, it’s probably best to avoid trying to walk through them as there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to return. Or maybe that’s part of the appeal for fans who have long been obsessed with the creepypasta lore?
It’s very cool to see more creative marketing for original horror, and I’m keen to see if more of these pop up ahead of the movie’s global release on May 29.
Early reactions to Backrooms have been very positive
Backrooms had its premiere recently, and critics who saw it early have been raving about it. The horror movie has been described as “wholly unique and original” and “the best creepypasta adaptation yet”.
Kane Parsonsā #Backrooms is wild stuff. A wholly unique and original horror film that freaks you out and creeps you out while luring you deeper into its eerie, liminal nightmare. While #Backrooms ultimately works better as a series, Kane Parsons delivers a promising debut feature, firmly establishing himself as one to watch. I’m a sucker for liminal horror, and when BACKROOMS works, it’s a waking nightmare. Easily the best creepypasta adaptation yet. pic.twitter.com/hn8RcVjcYtMay 8, 2026
Kane Parsonsā #Backrooms is a TRIP. A brilliant, frightening vision. Beautifully claustrophobic, pulse-pounding & freaky AF. Superb world building, edge-of-your-seat suspense & earned scares. There’s no denying the hype for this movie has been off the charts. Kane Parsons is now A24’s youngest director, soaring to new heights after the success of his viral YouTube series.
We still have a couple of weeks to go before fans can deliver their verdict, but so far it feels like a promising entry into A24’s horror slate and I’m sure it will be worth the wait.
