Samsung’s next smartwatch lineup may give owners very different reasons to upgrade.
Leaker Evan Blass has shared apparent marketing images for the Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 ahead of the company’s Unpacked event. Ultra 2 appears to receive the larger update. Watch 9 looks closer to a routine annual refresh.
Recent Watch 8 owners may find little reason to replace their device. People who use an Ultra for long workouts or travel could gain more from the new model.
Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 gets the bigger hardware upgrade
According to Blass, battery capacity rises by about one-third, from 590mAh in the current Ultra to 800mAh in the new model. Extra capacity could extend use during GPS or LTE sessions and overnight health tracking, though Samsung has not confirmed runtime.
Peak screen brightness may rise from 3,000 to 5,000 nits. Maps and workout information could remain more readable under direct sunlight if the figure proves accurate.
The leaked specification lists a titanium case that is 12% thinner. Reduced bulk could improve comfort during long days and sleep tracking.
An IP69K rating also appears in the specifications, adding resistance to dust and high-pressure water.
Galaxy Watch 9 looks like a smaller step
The images reveal that Watch 9 will use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear Elite processor, replacing the Exynos chips found in recent Galaxy Watches. Buyers could get faster performance and better battery efficiency, though neither improvement has been proven yet.
According to WinFuture, Watch 9 will return in 40mm and 44mm sizes with battery capacities close to those of the current models. Cream, Silver and Graphite finishes appear in the leaked images, and the case retains the overall look of the Galaxy Watch 8.
Bluetooth 6.0 and optional LTE are also listed, while Cream, Silver, and Graphite finishes appear in Blass’s images. Overall styling stays close to the Galaxy Watch 8.
Watch 9 is expected to run Wear OS 7 with Samsung’s One UI 9 Watch interface, but the leak offers no details on how either will change daily use.

Who has the best reason to upgrade
If your current Ultra often runs low before the day ends or feels bulky at night, the Ultra 2 could be worth a closer look. A slimmer case and larger battery address both complaints. Owners who rarely need an extra charge and have no problem sleeping with the watch can probably stay put.
Watch 8 users have a tougher case for upgrading. Familiar styling and similar battery capacity mean Samsung will need to prove that Watch 9 runs faster or lasts longer in daily use. Without a noticeable improvement, replacing a year-old watch would be difficult to justify.
People still wearing older Galaxy Watch models have skipped several generations, so either new model may offer a larger jump. With Unpacked only a day away, Samsung soon has to prove whether either smartwatch deserves to replace a watch that still works.
