Hulu has given fans of the graphic novel Southern Bastards by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour something to look forward to, ordering a pilot episode for a TV adaptation of the story, which the authors have described as “The Dukes of Hazzard by the Coen Brothers.”.
Per Deadline, the show is set to follow “a tenacious military vet into Craw County, Alabama, in search of her estranged father. What she finds is a murderous hornet’s nest of organized crime run by the winningest high school football coach in the South [Coach Boss].
“Roberta is a former marine [sic] who is facing charges by the military after an incident in Afghanistan. Intelligent and psychologically complex, she’s constantly trying to understand and outrun her generational trauma and inherited violence.

“When Roberta comes to Craw County, she’s just out for revenge, but if she’s going to change this county for good and topple everything Boss has built, she’s got to put down roots and find a home in the town.”
Details are few and far between, but we do know who will play the three lead roles. Erin Kellyman has been cast as Roberta, and Kevin Bacon will play her father, Earl, son of the Craw County’s legendary sheriff; but it’s the casting of Tim McGraw in the role of Coach Boss is what sets up Southern Bastards as a possible rival to Yellowstone.

If you’re a longtime Yellowstone fan, you might remember McGraw starring as James Dutton in spinoff 1883 (with two appearances in season 4 of the main show).
It’s James who starts the ball rolling on the entire Dutton legacy, leaving behind a life of poverty to go in search of a better future in Montana with his wife Margaret (Faith Hill).
However, this isn’t the only Yellowstone link between McGraw and Southern Bastards. It sounds like the Hulu pilot is going to be a more modern, edgy take on the neo-Western genre that’s the trademark of Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan (although neo-Southern would be more appropriate here), but casting country singers in acting roles is a textbook Sheridan move.
Just last week we reported that country star Morgan Wade was joining the cast of Dutton Ranch, while Lainey Wilson, Zach Bryan and Ryan Bingham have all featured in named roles in Yellowstone itself. Two other country singers, Riley Green and Chris Stapleton, have previously been cast in Yellowstone spinoffs.
Fingers crossed that Southern Bastards gets greenlit for a full season — we’ll share further casting, production, and release date details as and when we get them.
