Bloodborne is getting an animated film treatment at Sony

News Room

Sony Pictures dropped some exciting news at CinemaCon 2026. The beloved gothic horror video game Bloodborne is getting an R-rated animated film adaptation. According to a Variety report, the film will stay “very true” to the gory, nightmarish spirit that made the game so iconic. And honestly, that is exactly what fans needed to hear.

For the uninitiated, Bloodborne is a gothic action horror game developed by FromSoftware and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Players step into the role of a Hunter navigating the cursed city of Yharnam. The city is ravaged by a mysterious blood-borne illness that has turned its citizens into violent, deranged beasts.

Who is making the Bloodborne movie?

Bloodborne is actually the second FromSoftware title being adapted for the screen. Elden Ring was picked up earlier by A24 for a film adaptation. Unlike the Elden Ring movie, though, the Bloodborne film will be animated.

The project is co-produced by PlayStation Productions and Lyrical Animation, with Lyrical Media also co-financing alongside Sony Pictures. YouTube creator Seán McLoughlin, better known as JackSepticEye, is also on board as a co-producer. He has 48 million online followers and has spent years playing and documenting Bloodborne on his channel.

Are video game adaptations officially Hollywood’s new gold mine?

Video game adaptations have quietly become one of Hollywood’s most reliable bets. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is tracking to be one of 2026’s biggest hits. Last year, the Minecraft Movie also performed strongly at the box office.

On the TV side, HBO’s The Last of Us became one of the most acclaimed shows of its year, and Amazon Prime’s Fallout series proved that the format works brilliantly. No release date has been set for Bloodborne yet, but between the R-rating and Sony‘s commitment to keeping it faithful, this one already feels like it is in good hands.
