If you have a heart and also remember what VHS is, you’ll have likely been devastated by the news that the upcoming reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer has been canceled by Hulu.
Titled Buffy: New Sunnydale, the show was set to follow a new teen mentored by Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) in a partially rebuilt Sunnydale.
As Gellar said in an Instagram video: “I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me. Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale.

“I want to thank Chloé Zhao because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish, yet affordable boots, and thanks to Chloe, I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means not only to me, but to all of you. And this doesn’t change any of that.”
Frankly, I’m not having that. Luckily for us, the announcement coincides with Gellar’s new horror movie, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, being released.
To me, director duo Radio Silence (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett) are an obvious choice to save the show we all desperately want and need… and the good news is that they’d be “absolutely honored”.
Buffy: New Sunnydale would be epic with Radio Silence at the helm — and they’re not ruling it out
“Yeah, we would be honored to have a hand in that,” Gillett graciously responds when I ask the pair about potentially saving the Buffy reboot. It’s not like they’ve got much on the roster — just a small gap between Scream 7 and Ready or Not 2 both being released this month before production for The Mummy 4 hopefully starts in August.
But who cares if we have to wait a while? They both make it clear to me that from working with Gellar, she’s one of the greatest ‘final girls’ (the girl who makes it to the end) in the horror genre of all time… and they’ve worked with an absolutely incredible list.
“We’ve got really lucky with the actors we’ve worked with: Melissa Barrera, John Ortega, Catherine Newton, Sarah Michelle Gellar,” Bettinelli-Olpin adds. “It’s shocking to us that Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox are there… that’s a lot of really great actors doing really great things.
“I think, and they all bring something different to it. I don’t think we’ve ever set out to say, ‘All right, we’re making a movie with a cool final girl.’ I think it’s more like, ‘All right, we got this great script with this great character’.
“It’s that mix of like, being f**king cool, but also seeing yourself in them,” he concludes. And who ticks all those boxes than Buffy Summers?
Take this piece as me manifesting a resurrection worthy of any slay — if anybody can make it happen, it’s these guys.
