The producers behind the Spider-Verse movies have revealed if they’d be open to overseeing the Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU) reboot.
In an exclusive chat with TechRadar, Phil Lord and Chris Miller didn’t rule out the possibility. However, they also admitted that “so many hypotheticals” would need to fall into place for that to become a reality.
The discussion was part of a wider interview about the duo’s new sci-fi epic Project Hail Mary (NB: check out my Project Hail Mary review to see if it’s worth watching). The Ryan Gosling-led film is the first big-screen project Lord and Miller have directed since 2014’s 22 Jump Street, a result of myriad producing roles the pair have held over the last decade.

Of those productions, four have centered on Spider-Man — or, rather, alternate versions of the superhero alias of one Peter Parker. Indeed, Lord and Miller have overseen work on the first two Spider-Verse movies and are similarly leading development on the film trilogy’s final entry, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Furthermore, Lord and Miller executively produced Spider-Noir, a 1930s-era, Nicolas Cage-fronted, live-action show that’s coming to MGM+ (US) and Prime Video (internationally) on May 27.
Given their involvement in numerous non-Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) projects starring various incarnations of the wall-crawler, the pair seem ideally placed to head up version 2.0 of the SSU.
Last December, Sony Pictures appeared to call time on its Spider-Man-less cinematic franchise following a series of critical and commercial flops. However, just two months later, the studio’s film boss Tom Rothman indicated (per the On the Town podcast) that Sony planned to reboot the SSU at some point.
In the event that Sony asked them to be the SSU’s creative overlords — you know, like Kevin Feige at Marvel, James Gunn/Peter Safran at DC, and Dave Filoni/Lynwen Brennan for Star Wars — then, would Lord and Miller be interested?
“That’s a big ‘if’,” Lord replied. “Like, that is the biggest ‘if’ in the world.”
“There are so many hypotheticals out there in the universe,” Miller added. “But, as you know, we’re big fans of Spider-Man and that whole universe, so who knows?”
