If I wasn’t fizzing with stress every time I sat down to watch an episode, I’d be crying that The Pitt season 2 is drawing to a close. Our favorite ER’s chaotic Fourth of July shift has been on our screens since January, but all dreadful things must come to an end.
And dreadful it has been. We’ve seen patient deaths, the fallout of sexual assaults, a potentially abused child, and a truckload of bodies (alive, don’t worry) flooding in after a waterpark incident. For our team of medics, it’s all just another day on the job.
With one episode left until the hit HBO Max show’s annual hiatus, absolutely anything could happen — especially Dr. Robby’s (Noah Wyle) permanent departure after spending most of the last two seasons in inner turmoil.

‘It’s much more character driven as opposed to season 1’
“There’s a couple… there’s one real surprise heading towards you at alarming speed,” Dourif tells me about the upcoming season 2 finale of The Pitt. “There’s a lot coming. I think that season 2 is much more character-oriented as opposed to season one, which was really about everybody centering this mass casualty event.”
Of course, by this point in season 2, a nearby school shooting meant that the ER was overrun by teenage casualties, with a potential suspect locked in one of the hospital’s interrogation rooms. Tensions were high, and the drama was sustained over the season’s final four episodes.
This time, the stakes feel a lot lower, with no mass fatalities in sight.
“Season 2 is much more about particular characters reaching a point of conflict and then having their resolution. I’m sorry to be so vague,” Dourif continues.
“It’s a beautiful season. I actually think that we even hit our groove a little more in season 2 than in season 1, which was a real fear of everybody making the show because it was so well received in season 1. We were like, ‘Can we do it again without this format of something as big as the mass casualty?'”
On the plus side, this means that our big surprise waiting in store isn’t going to be one that kills somebody off. With The Pitt season 3 already confirmed, Supriya Ganesh (Samira Mohan) is already set to depart.
During an event for the release of HBO Max UK, Wyle confirmed that season 3 story arcs were in development, with character shifts being chalked up to the ER being a teaching hospital, meaning an abnormally high turnover.
As long as the others are safe, I’m happy to let The Pitt season 2 finale take its course… even if I am going to be surprised one last time.
