The Mandalorian and Grogu will officially mark the return of Star Wars on the big screen. The movie, which arrives on May 22, will be the first Lucasfilm project to hit theaters in almost seven years. Some might say that *ahem* this is the way Star Wars should be experienced.

The Mandalorian and Grogu trailer
The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s first trailer landed online in September 2025. However, while it teased plenty, including Sigourney Weaver’s character and Rotta the Hutt (more on them shortly), it didn’t tell us anything about the plot.
Things didn’t get any clearer after a new teaser for The Mandalorian & Grogu was broadcast during this year’s Super Bowl. Indeed, the 30-second TV spot drew negative reactions from swathes of the Star Wars fanbase, who simply wanted another extended look at the forthcoming film.
Thankfully, Disney and Lucasfilm unveiled The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s main trailer on February 17. Check it out below:

Possible spoilers follow for The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Here’s the confirmed cast list so far for the upcoming Star Wars flick:
- Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin/The Mandalorian
- Grogu as himself
- Sigourney Weaver as Colonel Ward
- Steve Blum as Garazeb ‘Zeb’ Orrelios
- Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt
- Martin Scorsese as an unnamed Ardennian shopkeeper
As The Mandalorian‘s leading pair, it wouldn’t be a film sequel to the Disney+ Original show without Din Djarin and Grogu/Baby Yoda.
They’ll be joined by at least one familiar face in this movie, too, with Blum returning to voice the Lasat known affectionately as Zeb. After making his debut in the animated show Star Wars: Rebels as a member of the Ghost crew, Zeb is now a captain of The New Republic. He’ll likely take orders from Colonel Ward, aka the formerly mysterious character that Sigourney Weaver was tapped to play in May 2024.
Weaver won’t be the only newcomer to the Star Wars franchise.
For starters, legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese will have a voice-only cameo as the Ardennian shopkeeper whom Mando and Grogu visit to get information on some Hutts, aka the sentient slug-like creatures known for becoming crime lords.
White, who’s best known for playing Carmen Berzatto in The Bear (aka the multi-award-winning and critically-acclaimed Hulu TV show), has been cast as one such Hutt, with White hired to play Jabba the Hutt’s muscular son Rotta. He’s one of three confirmed Hutts we’ll see, although it’s unclear who’ll voice the others. For now, Disney and Lucasfilm are simply referring to them as Brother and Sister Hutt.
Additionally, nobody knows who’s been hired to play Bai, Clang, and Keeto, i.e., the three Ancellans we see riding with Grogu in trailer #1. The same is true of Embo, a fearsome bounty hunter and Hutt bodyguard first seen during The Clone Wars. Embo was confirmed to be part of the proceedings in The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s official trailer.
Finally, Deadline has reported that Coyne will reprise his role as one of the unnamed Imperial Warlords we saw in The Mandalorian season 3 episode 7. He’s a member of the Shadow Council who met — via Hologram — with Giancarlo Esposito’s Moff Gideon in the Star Wars TV Original. Hopefully, we’ll find out his actual name in the movie.
The Mandalorian and Grogu story synopsis and speculation
The Mandalorian & Grogu‘s story is largely under lock and key ahead of release. Indeed, Disney has only revealed a logline for the film, which reads: “The evil Empire has fallen and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin and his young apprentice Grogu.”
Still, the trailers, especially the most recent one, have given some indication as to what the story will entail. Potential spoilers immediately follow for The Mandalorian and Grogu, so proceed at your own risk.
Judging by trailer #2’s first few clips, the eponymous duo will seek out Brother and Sister Hutt with a view to extracting information from them about the remnants of the Galactic Empire. That way, they can track down anyone still loyal to Emperor Palpatine (who’s not dead yet, remember) and, in the words of Mando himself, “take out every bad guy” in The New Republic’s “deck of cards.”
For Colonel Ward, though, sending Din and Baby Yoda on this mission “isn’t about revenge”, it’s about “preventing another war” from erupting if the Galactic Empire rises from the ashes to try tyranically lauding it over the galaxy once more. Whether the titular pair agrees with that or not is up for debate.
Of course, our intrepid heroes’ plans won’t be executed without a few hiccups along the way. Indeed, trailer #2 reveals they’ll get in over their heads. With Din captured by the Hutts, Grogu hunted by Embo, and myriad criminals and monsters out to get them, this could be the pair’s most dangerous quest to date.
Then there’s the elephant in the room about how The Mandalorian & Grogu might set the stage for the Star Wars crossover movie that new Lucasfilm co-CEO Dave Filoni is leading development on.
One of many new Star Wars films and Disney+ shows in development, the untitled ensemble flick will reportedly see Din Djarin, Grogu, Ahsoka Tano, and other Star Wars heroes team up to do battle with Grand Admiral Thrawn. He’s the blue-skinned Big Bad with ambitions to remake the Galactic Empire in his own image, and a fan-favorite villain played by Lars Mikkelsen in season 1 of Star Wars: Ahsoka.
Considering some Imperial remnants will show up in The Mandalorian and Grogu, should we expect this film to start sowing the seeds for that team-up movie? Or has it been put on the back burner amid the change of leadership at Lucasfilm? We’ll have to wait and see.
Is The Mandalorian season 4 still in development?
The ensemble movie I mentioned notwithstanding, Lucasfilm and Disney would be silly to bring Mando and Baby Yoda’s story to an end after The Mandalorian and Grogu. The possibility of the pair returning to Disney+ (aka one of the world’s best streaming services) for another season isn’t outlandish.
Will a fourth season of The Mandalorian get made, though? In January 2024, Deadline reported that The Mandalorian season 4 was in development. More recently, Jon Favreau, co-creator of the Star Wars TV series and director of its upcoming film sequel, told Empire magazine (per Fiction Horizon): “We were planning on doing a fourth season. I had actually written all of that. I still have season 4 sitting on my desk.”
In short, don’t expect Lucasfilm or its parent company to call time on two of their most popular characters just yet.
