- A new image for Avengers: Doomsday has been posted online
- The film’s directors uploaded the blurry picture to their Instagram account
- Marvel fans are trying to decipher what it teases about the MCU movie
Marvel fans have been sent into a tailspin after a new albeit incredibly blurry image for Avengers: Doomsday was released online.
The picture, which was uploaded today (September 9), appeared on the Instagram account of Joe and Anthony Russo, aka the movie’s directors. Unfortunately for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) ravenous fanbase, it reveals absolutely nothing about the forthcoming Marvel Phase 6 film because of how frustratingly foggy it is.
Mind you, that hasn’t stopped MCU devotees turning detective to try and work out what it shows. Indeed, threads on various Reddit pages, including r/marvelstudios and r/marvelstudiosspoilers, are littered with comments concerning the cryptic image as fans scramble to determine what it’s trying to tell us.
So far, the prevailing theory is that it’s an out-of-focus shot of the chalkboard owned by The Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards. The elasticated de-facto leader of Marvel’s First Family was seen scribbling all manner of equations on said chalkboard throughout The Fantastic Four: First Steps. And, given that movie’s direct ties to Doomsday – read my The Fantastic Four: First Steps ending explained piece for more details – it’s not a *ahem* stretch to assume this equation-filled chalkboard is what the Russo brothers are teasing.
There are other possibilities. Some fans believe it’s a zoomed-in shot of a Time Variance Authority (TVA) monitor. The TVA made their MCU debut in Loki on Disney+ and, if the gossip columns are to be believed, it’ll be a key location in Avengers: Doomsday.
Other fan suggestions believe it’s something to do with an impending reveal for the rest of Avengers 5‘s character line-up. For a movie that’ll celebrate the breadth of Marvel films that have been released over the last 30-plus years, an unveiling akin to March’s hours-long, chair-based livestream that saw Doomsday‘s initial 27-strong cast unveiled to the world isn’t out of the question.
There’s even the odd claim that the teaser image’s caption – #DoomsdayIsComing – is not only a reference to the “Thanos is coming” line uttered by Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner in Avengers: Infinity War, but that it’s also a clue that the Infinity Saga’s Big Bad will appear in the next Avengers film. Hey, stranger things have happened in the ongoing Marvel Multiverse Saga!
But, what do you think? Is this something we should be poring over with a fine-toothed comb? Or are MCU fanatics getting excited over nothing? Let me know in the comments.
