From the moment I unboxed it, it was clear this was a very different device from most boardroom streaming cameras. It looks more like a soundbar, measuring around 80cm in length, and has been designed to be wall-mounted or placed above or below large monitors.

It does include a good-quality built-in speaker, but its primary function is as a high-end streaming camera with an advanced microphone system. Unlike most PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras, the Insta360 Connect features two cameras—one wide-angle and one PTZ—working in tandem to intelligently cover everyone in the room, giving the sense of having your own mini film crew on hand.

The unit is styled like a traditional audio bar and can be mounted on top of a large monitor using an optional mounting kit, placed underneath, or fixed to the wall. This is not a compact webcam—it’s large and designed for boardrooms or large studio spaces. Measuring 685 x 76 x 85mm and weighing 2.27kg, it’s clearly aimed at the professional market, not for home or small office use.

The setup is out of the box and straightforward. Connect the device to your computer using a USB-C cable, then output via HDMI to a monitor. Once powered on and the software is installed, it’s immediately recognised by streaming apps like Teams or Google Meet. It will also connect to LAN and WiFi once set up, which enables computer-free use if your system is configured to do that.

Insta360 Connect: Features

The Insta360 Connect is marketed as a dual-camera AI video bar, and visually, it does resemble a soundbar—just with two cameras on the front. One of the first things I appreciated was that it didn’t require any software installation on my computer to function. If your business restricts software installations, you can still use this as long as your system recognises webcams, although some type of connection is required for the initial registration. After that, it’s effectively plug-and-play.

Dominating the front are two 4K cameras. The first is a fixed camera with a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor, 16mm field of view, and an f/2.4 aperture—great for wide shots and capable even in lower light conditions, recording at 4K 30fps. The second is a gimbal-mounted PTZ camera, also 4K at 30fps, with an f/2.0 aperture. This gimbal-mounted camera tracks the speaker automatically, following them as they move around.

Some of the AI-enhanced features are really key to Connect, and that is what makes it different from many other boardroom webcams. The AI integration goes beyond the usual application of resolution improvement for large displays; it can also readjust framing and composition to ensure everyone is visible. One of the features that I really liked was the fact that the system could create a virtual headshot gallery, separating participants into individual windows, similar to standard conferencing platforms.

In use, the system intelligently switches between the wide-angle room view and the PTZ camera tracking the speaker. If someone stands up and moves about, the camera will follow them automatically and ultimately make meetings feel more dynamic.

One of the most important features is the 14-microphone array, which is pushed to its maximum sensitivity and will offer up to a 33-foot voice pickup range. The mics use noise reduction processing, and in testing, the audio quality remained clear, even when those in the meeting were seated at the far end of the table.

One of the more unique features is the whiteboard mode. What’s surprising about this is that you don’t need a digital whiteboard—the AI can identify any standard whiteboard in the room, which you can then select, add and use as an overlay for the video feed or full-screen.

Getting started with the Insta360 Connect is relatively straightforward. Simply plug the USB Type-C cable from the Connect into your computer, complete a quick registration process, and then select the Insta360 Connect as your webcam from whichever streaming application you’re using.

One thing to consider during setup is that this bar is designed for business and commercial use. That means it’s intended to be left in place, mounted above or below a larger screen and for use in boardrooms or meeting rooms. These environments won’t always have a computer connected, and the Connect is well equipped for this scenario. It includes a LAN port for direct connection to your local network, so once registration is done, you can leave it in situ, power it on when needed, and it will connect automatically. If connected to WiFi, the same applies.

Once it’s online, all control can be handled via the included remote—just like most conferencing systems found in boardrooms around the world.

For output, the unit includes two HDMI ports, allowing you to connect it to virtually any large screen. Once that connection is made, you’ll see the Insta360 Connect interface, where you can access settings and view a live camera preview.

Once it’s set up, the system starts to show its real value. In a one-to-one video call, it behaves like any other conferencing camera, albeit with notably better image and audio quality. Where it really differs is in its dual-camera system. If you’re running a workshop remotely, the wide-angle camera captures the full room or studio in a single shot, while the PTZ camera locks on to the presenter, tracking their movements as they move around the space. It essentially switches between the two cameras automatically, depending on who’s speaking or moving, and it’s a bit like having your own personal film crew switching between cameras and angles in real time.

In use, this feature is surprisingly effective. During testing with several volunteers seated around a table, the wide-angle camera captured the group, then seamlessly switched to the PTZ camera when someone began to speak or stood up. Once they sat back down, the view returned to wide-angle. The transitions were generally relatively smooth, and the tracking feels natural. One feature that I really liked was the gallery mode. This separates participants into headshot-style windows, as you’d see on Teams or Zoom, but using the single camera’s AI, not multiple cameras. This feature is manually activated via the remote and works well.

The most impressive feature, especially when teaching or presenting, is the whiteboard mode. If you have one or more whiteboards in the room with diagrams or notes, Connect can recognise them using AI. You can then select and adjust and call them up with the remote.

Not only can you call the contents of the whiteboards up like slides in a PowerPoint presentation, but you can choose to display the whiteboard as the main screen or use it as a transparent overlay with the presenter still visible behind it. This is incredibly useful for pointing out key areas or maintaining engagement without switching to a separate screen or presentation file.

Throughout testing, the Insta360 Connect ran smoothly. There was a learning curve around understanding all the connection options and fully using features like the whiteboard mode, but once it’s registered and you realise the remote is your main interface, the system becomes simple and intuitive. The interface is responsive, and everything from tracking to switching camera views is relatively easy to work out.

What quickly becomes apparent is just how far ahead Connect is in terms of both video and audio quality compared with typical streaming cameras. This is reflected in the price, of course, but what you’re getting is a system that performs more like a production setup than a basic webcam. The AI-powered camera switching, tracking, and scene detection make meetings more dynamic and professional. It avoids that static, disengaged feel you often get from traditional setups.

During testing, I was really impressed with the clarity of the video and the depth of the audio that was captured by that 14-microphone array. The audio was clean and clear, even at a distance, and with built-in noise reduction, it consistently captured voices accurately in a room with multiple people.

One minor downside mentioned by a few test participants was the PTZ camera’s movement. Because it’s so responsive—and far more active than many are used to, the movement on screen took some getting used to. If you’ve got a boardroom table and a group of people gathered for a meeting, this dual-camera streaming system is perfect for that environment. Above all, the audiovisual quality is exceptional. If you want your team to look and sound their best, then there’s no doubt that this setup delivers.

The wide-angle camera captures the entire room in superb detail, and the automatic reframing works well to help minimise empty space; it also means that you don’t have to waste time adjusting the camera before meetings. What really stands out is the PTZ camera and how it follows you around the room, which makes things visually more engaging in what can often be dull or static video calls. When the visuals are combined with decent-quality microphone pickup, it all gives a far superior experience than you usually get with video conferencing.

Setup involves a bit of initial configuration, probably best handled by your IT department, but once completed, the system is effectively plug-and-play. Select it as your webcam in your platform of choice, and you’re ready to go.

Advanced features like whiteboard mode are genuinely useful. Instead of uploading files or switching inputs, you can call up physical whiteboards in the room using the remote, making meetings smoother and more interactive.
