Netflix is adding 61 new movies in September 2025, a hefty amount for it to keep its place among the best streaming services. I couldn’t help but scour its list of new movies to see what’s coming up, and you’re in for a treat.
You can always rely on Netflix to add the best movies, especially those loved by critics and my movie picks below all have over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes from reviews. But that’s not the only good thing about them, as they’re also perfect for movie lovers of all ages – and are great for older viewers who want a good movie to invoke a sense of nostalgia.
I’m already ecstatic for September to arrive, and if you haven’t yet planned your month of movies yet, check out our full list of everything new on Netflix in September 2025.

The admiration for Spielberg’s sci-fi epic has continued to build since it was released in the early ’80s. It’s loved by all age groups, and has had a lasting impact on countless filmmakers.
When a group of alien beings visit Earth, one of them is left behind in the rush of a swift take-off. Left alone to navigate his new and strange surroundings, the lone alien is discovered by a 10-year-old boy Elliott (Henry Thomas) who’s frightened at first.
As the two soon grow closer, the extraterrestrial adapts to human life, but this soon is interrupted as government forces are sent out to track down the extraterrestrial. Determined to save his new freind, Elliott hatches a plan to help send the alien home, even if that means he must say goodbye forever.
It’s so much more than a story about an out-of-this-world creature, it’s an emotional coming-of-age story with a unique and valuable friendship at the forefront – and its conclusion always makes me shed a tear.
La La Land (2016)

Age rating: PG-13
Runtime: 128 minutes
Director: Damien Chazelle
Arriving on: September 1
While we’re on the subject of movies that make me cry, there’s never a dry eye in my house whenever La La Land is on. There’s nothing quite like Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling’s on-screen chemistry, and the movie’s original score and dynamic color palette are just perfection.
In the heart of Los Angeles, aspiring actress Mia (Stone) is a barista serving coffee to the stars while sifting through audition after audition. At the same time, Sebastian (Gosling) is a jazz pianist with a dream of opening his own venue.
When the two cross paths, a strong romance is formed, but soon the tribulations of their respective career paths emerge and the future of their relationship is at stake. Which one will they chose; stardom, or each other?

There’s nothing quite as timeless as the movie musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s iconic children’s book – it was one of my favorites as a child. I can’t wait to see it return to Netflix’s library this month, and I urge you to show it to your young ones if you haven’t already – just give them a warning about that boat scene first.
When world-famous chocolatier Willy Wonka (Gene Wilder) announces he’s opening his chocolate factory to five lucky winners of golden tickets, Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum) wants it more than any other child – but his family are so poor that a chocolate bar comes once in a blue moon for him.
Luck is on his side when he finds a golden ticket in a chocolate bar, which sends him on a tour of the mystery chocolate factory along with four incredibly spoiled children, but the experience presents some unexpected turns for them.

Another childhood favorite of mine is coming back to Netflix this month, and it’s none other than Chicken Run – one of the best animated movies in my opinion. There’s only a select number of movies that have impacted me enough to be able to quote from memory, and Chicken Run is one of them.
The chickens at Tweedy Egg Farm all have one thing in common; they all long to escape and be free, including Ginger (Julia Sawalha). But despite her cunning attempts to flee, she’s always ends up being caught.
When they think they’ve tried every path to an escape, American rooster Rocky (Mel Gibson) lands in their pen and a final chance to flee presents itself. When the farm owners consider selling chicken pies to make more money, the chickens must act quick to escape the farm before it’s too late.

An all-round British icon and great family-friendly movie, the live action Paddington movie packs an iconic ensemble cast that includes Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, and Peter Capaldi.
The pages of Michael Bond’s children’s book come to life when a Peruvian bear (Ben Whishaw) lands in London after an earthquake destroys his home. He meets the Brown family, who take him in and give him the name ‘Paddington’, but there’s someone else with eyes on the new arrival.
When taxidermist Millicent Clyde (Nicole Kidman) learns that the bear is wandering the streets of London, she’s determined to capture and stuff him for a museum collection, making the Brown family come together to protect Paddington.
