  • It’s included in the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max’s main camera
  • The hardware-based feature offers (limited) manual control over exposure and depth of field

In Apple’s big iPhone 18 event, the headline upgrade in the new iPhone 18 camera, from my perspective as a professional photographer, is the company’s first mechanical aperture (‘variable aperture’, as Apple likes to call it).

This feature is not only a first for Apple, it’s a rarity in smartphones — Huawei equips several of its flagship devices with one, including its Pura 80 Ultra and other current models.
