Google is turning video creation into a prompt away from reality.
With its latest update to Google Vids, the company is pushing deeper into AI-powered storytelling. The update gives users the ability to direct avatars with simple text, customize their look and behavior, and publish content faster than ever. What once required editing skills, multiple tools — and a fair bit of patience — can now be done in a single workspace with a few well-placed prompts.
From AI-generated presenters that can interact with your content to built-in music creation and one-click YouTube publishing, Google Vids is evolving from a lightweight editor into a serious contender in the creator economy.
So what exactly is Google Vids… and how far can it go?
What is Google Vids?
One of the newest additions to the Google Workspace lineup, Google Vids is a timeline-based video editor built on Gemini AI.
The video editing tool brings scripting, scene generation, and editing into a single, collaborative environment. First announced in 2024 and rolled out gradually through 2025, the platform represents Google’s push to make video creation as intuitive as working in Docs or Slides.
Since its debut, Google has steadily expanded Vids’ capabilities with frequent updates, layering in new AI-driven features that blur the line between traditional editing and prompt-based creation. The result is a tool that’s evolving quickly from a simple editor into a fully AI-assisted production studio.
Directing and customizing AI avatars
The most noteworthy feature of the latest update lets users direct their AI avatars with nothing more than simple text prompts.
A recent post by Google reads, in part: “Move beyond static talking heads. Place avatars into specific scenes and have them interact directly with uploaded objects, like a product or a prop, set against custom backdrops. It’s an easy way to create engaging tutorials and standout social content, or bring your passion project to life.”
This update also makes it easier to customize the appearance of AI avatars. Users can change their clothing, add accessories, and more, all while preserving their original voice and general aesthetic.
Note that these features are available only to users with Google AI Pro or Ultra subscriptions.
YouTube integration: Recording and sharing videos
The latest update to Google Vids makes it easier to record and share videos. Not only can users download the Google Vids Screen Recorder Chrome extension to easily record their screens, but Google Vids has also added the ability to publish videos directly to YouTube.
All videos uploaded to YouTube in this manner are automatically marked as Private. This gives users complete control over sharing their creations with the world.
Adding custom music
Google recently made it possible to add AI-generated music to these custom videos, too. Using either Lyria 3 or Lyria 3 Pro, subscribers can generate songs up to three minutes in length and add them to their creations without ever leaving the Vids platform.
Improving video generation
Finally, the team at Google also updated their video generation model to support Veo 3.1. Users with personal Google accounts can generate up to 10 free videos per month, while those with AI Ultra subscriptions can generate up to 1,000 videos per month.
Exploring the many features of Google Vids
With regular updates to the platform, Google Vids is quickly emerging as a serious competitor to established tools like Canva and CapCut. While it offers a limited set of features for free, the platform’s full potential is largely unlocked through its paid subscription tiers, where its AI-powered capabilities truly shine.
As Google continues to invest in Vids and expand its feature set, the tool is steadily positioning itself not just as another video editor, but as a glimpse into a more streamlined, AI-driven future of content creation.
