Denzel Washington can see the finish line of his career. Before he crosses it, the two-time Oscar winner wants to try new things. One of those is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
While promotingĀ Gladiator IIĀ on Australiaās TodayĀ show, Washington revealed the plans for his final acting projects, which include a role in Black Panther 3.
āFor me, itās about the filmmakers. Especially at this point in my career, I am only interested in working with the best,ā Washington said about his future plans in acting. āI donāt know how many more films Iām going to make. Itās probably not that many. I want to do things I havenāt done.ā
āI played Othello at 22. I am about to play Othello at 70,ā Washington continued.Ā āAfter that, I am playing Hannibal. After that, Iāve been talking to Steve McQueen about a film. After that, Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next Black Panther. After that, Iām going to do the film Othello.Ā After that, Iām going to do King Lear. After that, Iām going to retire.ā
Talks ofĀ Black Panther 3Ā began on the heels of 2022ās Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which received five Oscar nominations and grossed over $859 million worldwide. In January 2023, Letitia Wright, who plays Shuri, said Black Panther 3 is āalready in the worksā but wonāt come to fruition for a while. To date,Ā Black Panther 3Ā has not been officially greenlit by Marvel.
Washington has a special connection withĀ Black PantherĀ star Chadwick Boseman, who tragically died from cancer in 2020. Before his death, Boseman revealed that while studying acting at Howard University, Washington paid for his tuition to participate in an exchange program at Oxford.
Up next for Washington is Gladiator II, Ridley Scottās epic sequel to the Oscar-winningĀ Gladiator.Ā Washington stars as Macrinus, a former slave who becomes a powerful arms dealer with plans to control Rome. Macrinus raises a stable of gladiators, including Lucius, played by Paul Mescal.
