As anticipation builds for Apple’s fall launch season, new reports suggest the Apple Watch Ultra 4 could focus less on flashy redesigns and more on meaningful upgrades, especially in health tracking, performance, and everyday usability.
Here’s a closer look at what’s being rumored so far.
A push for smarter health tracking
One of the biggest rumors surrounding the Apple Watch Ultra 4 centers on its health capabilities. According to a Digitimes report cited by 9to5Mac, Apple is expected to significantly expand its sensor system.
The report suggests the device could “double the number of sensor components,” allowing the watch to rely less on software estimates and more on direct measurements. That shift could lead to more accurate readings across features like heart rate, sleep tracking, and blood oxygen levels.
As 9to5Mac notes, the move may help Apple “minimize its dependence on algorithmic data interpretation,” potentially improving both performance and efficiency. However, one long-awaited feature still appears out of reach. Blood sugar monitoring, while in development, is not expected to arrive with this model, according to the report.
Touch ID could finally arrive
Another feature gaining attention is biometric authentication. Evidence found in Apple’s internal code points to Touch ID being tested for future Apple Watch models.
“According to specific entries in the code, Apple has been experimenting with some form of biometric authentication on the Apple Watch,” Macworld reported. “Code for what clearly refers to the 2026 models of the Apple Watch mentions support for ‘AppleMesa,’ which has long been Apple’s internal codename for Touch ID.”
If it makes its way into the Ultra 4, Touch ID could be integrated into the side button, Digital Crown, or Action button, making tasks like unlocking the watch or confirming Apple Pay purchases faster and more convenient.
Battery life gains through efficiency
Battery life remains a key focus, and early reports suggest Apple is working on meaningful improvements here, too. Digitimes says the new model will have “power efficiency will improve significantly.” This could be driven by a more efficient S-series chip and the redesigned sensor system.
Geeky Gadgets adds that these improvements may allow for longer usage times without increasing battery size, meaning users could get more out of the watch without added bulk.
Design changes: Subtle, not radical
While earlier speculation hinted at a major redesign, more recent reports suggest Apple is taking a conservative approach.
DigiTimes notes there will be “alterations to the exterior design,” but the scale of those changes remains unclear. Meanwhile, insights from Geeky Gadgets suggest the overall look may remain familiar, with only minor refinements in size, materials, or weight.
Much of the anticipated redesign had been tied to microLED display technology, which now appears delayed, likely pushing any major visual overhaul to future models.
When to expect it
Apple Watch Ultra 4 is expected to be unveiled at Apple’s annual fall event in early September, which typically coincides with the new iPhone announcement. That puts it on shelves well ahead of the holiday season. With several months of rumor season still ahead, more details will almost certainly surface before then.
