- The movie is inspired by the online horror stories and will be released on May 29
A24’s new movie Backrooms has just got a full trailer ahead of its release on May 29, and the found footage elements have made me even more excited to go and see it.
I’m a huge fan of liminal space in horror movies, and it seems to be a trend at the moment. Recently, we saw NEON’s trailer for Exit 8, as well as the first teaser trailer for Backrooms, which I described as “perfect”.
Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, and Mark Duplass lead the cast of this movie, with huge horror producers attached like James Wan and Osgood Perkins.

What we know about A24’s Backrooms movie
Kane Parsons is writer-director of the project, after becoming well known for his YouTube web series about these creepy fictional places. Thank god they are fictional too, as I would not want to be stuck in any of them.
If you’re new to the concept, “Backrooms” are basically these strange liminal, maze-like dimensions of empty rooms and buzzing fluorescent lights. People who get stuck there are said to have glitched out of their reality into these endless, surreal, and often hostile environments.
Plenty of stories have been written about them, especially via Creepypasta, depicting empty office spaces, shopping malls, and endless hotel hallways. They often have a retro feel and uncomfortable lighting, and as you can see by the trailer, A24 and Parsons have chosen to focus on that sickly yellow color for their Backrooms design.
Plot-wise, we know the movie will follow a therapist as she ventures into an otherworldly dimension in search of her missing patient. We don’t know much more yet, so we’ll have to be brave and discover Backrooms‘ secrets for ourselves in theaters.
This could definitely be up there with some of A24’s biggest and scariest movies, and I’ll be first in line to see it when it arrives in May.
