You might be wondering how the late Robert Redford links the Oscars and the new Taylor Sheridan show The Madison together, but it’s actually not a huge stretch.
Let’s start with the former. On Sunday (March 15), we saw Redford included in the awards show’s In Memoriam section, with The Way We Were co-star Barbra Streisand taking to the stage to honor his career and legacy.

As we see in the above clip, Fonda questions why Streisand was chosen to do the tribute, telling Entertainment Tonight that she starred opposite Redford four times, opposed to Streisand’s one. All in all, there was much food for thought.
The day before (March 14), Paramount+ dropped the first three episodes of The Madison, with episode 1 dedicated solely to Redford.
Alongside the standard dedication at the end of the episode, Stacy (Michelle Pfeiffer) is seen watching A River Runs Through it — directed by Redford — with her granddaughters shortly after learning of her husband’s death.
It’s an incredibly touching moment, as the trio sits in a heavy silence trying to process their emotions. If anything, I’d say it was a lot more effective at paying homage to Redford’s impact than the Academy Awards.
With that in mind, I asked the cast of The Madison which Redford movie you need to stream this week… and their answer might be my favorite possible choice.

Patrick J. Adams and Beau Garrett immediately agree on All the President’s Men, the 1976 hit starring Redford alongside Dustin Hoffman. It’s an impeccable choice, following the pair as reporters whose investigation sheds light on the Watergate scandal, which compelled President Richard Nixon to resign from his post.
Two handsome men embroiled in a gripping political thriller… what more could you ask for? It’s fair to say that it’s resoundingly loved by many, maintaining a 95% Rotten Tomatoes score exactly 50 years after it was first released.
It’s beautiful in all senses of the word — beautifully shot, written, and designed, aside from the acting. US fans can watch it on HBO Max, UK fans on Apple TV, and Australian fans on SBS.

Of course, the other option is the Robert Redford movie shown in The Madison itself. Although he’s not in it, A River Runs Through It was Redford’s third directorial feature starring Brenda Blethyn, Craig Sheffer, and a young up-and-comer called Brad Pitt.
The film follows polar opposite brothers Paul (Pitt) and Norman (Sheffer), who bond over fly fishing… so you can see how easily it ties into the Montana mountains of The Madison (and Kurt Russell, who is often fishing in them).
“We watched it before we started filming at [Beau’s] house, and that was the great way to bond,” Elle Chapman tells me. “We actually watched it as actors, not as our characters, but then again in the show, obviously. It was a great way to settle into this softness and beauty of this show.”
A River Runs Through It is available to buy or rent on Amazon Prime Video in the US and UK, or on SBS in Australia.
Really, there’s no end to celebrating Redford and his movies… so happy viewing.
