Dr Jane Goodall, renowned for being the world’s foremost expert on chimpanzees, has died at the age of 91. As many fans look to movies and TV shows to honor her legacy, it’s time to clear up a big misconception – Gorillas in the Mist isn’t about her.
Instead, the Sigourney Weaver-led film focuses on Dian Fossey, an equally renowned anthropologist. But don’t be thinking there isn’t something incredible to stream on Goodall while we take in the news. In fact, Disney+ and Hulu are responsible for something that’s much better aligned with her life’s work (sadly, it’s not on Netflix).
I’m talking about the 2017 documentary Jane, which goes above and beyond what its name suggests. Back in 2017, Goodall said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon: “When I’m gone, I want to make absolutely sure that everything I’ve worked for all my life will be able to carry on.”
For us at home, I think Jane is the perfect way to begin fulfilling that wish.

Anything produced by National Geographic is going to be a knockout, but what makes Jane even more special is the fact it utlilizes so much never before seen footage. We’re taken through Goodall’s life story professionally and personally, research in Tanzania and her relationship with cameraman Hugo van Lawick.
Her time spent understanding and working with chimpanzees is shown as far back as the 1960s, and it’s breathtaking to visually get your head around the scope of her work. All too often, it’s easy to write off someone’s complete dedication to something they care about in a few short sentences that can’t begin to describe what was achieved in reality.
While it’s only a 90-minute look into a lifetime of dedication, Jane certainly does its subject justice. The principles of her work (primarily, doing our bit to make the world a better place) are the bedrock of everything we see, while the documentary also reminds us how much power, beauty, and intelligence the animal world holds.
Even if it weren’t for Goodall herself, I don’t think there’s ever been a better time to watch Jane. Many of us are feeling hopeless about the future, which seems to be full of unsolvable problems (and I suppose in some cases, that is true).
But we all need to be brave, and be more Jane. It’s beyond inspiring to see Goodall’s impact on the world, as well as what she leaves behind, with the Jane Goodall Institute continuing her work. Why would we not want to be a small part of making sure her research, passion and principles are carried forward to make something better?
