- The first trailer for Netflix’s new crime thriller movie The RIP has landed online
- It stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as morally complicated cops
- Originally due out before the end of 2025, The RIP won’t arrive until early 2026
Netflix has finally released the first trailer for its highly anticipated crime thriller film The RIP – and it looks like it’ll be an early frontrunner for the best Netflix movie of 2026.
The Netflix Original, which stars long-time collaborators Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, was supposed to arrive before the end of 2025. However, it’s not set to be released until January 16, 2026 now, so viewers have got a fairly long wait on their hands to check out the pair’s latest cinematic venture.
Still, while it’s disappointing that one of this year’s eagerly awaited new Netflix movies has been pushed into 2026, at least we’ve got some actual footage to enjoy. So, what are you waiting for? Watch The RIP‘s first teaser below.
Watch On
The RIP‘s inaugural trailer arrives 24 hours after Netflix revealed numerous first-look images at a film partly inspired by true events.
Indeed, as writer/director Joe Carnahan tells Tudum.com, The RIP “came out of a deeply personal experience that my friend went through, both as a father and as head of tactical narcotics for the Miami Dade police department. It’s inspired in part by his life and then, by my enduring love for those classic ’70’s cop thrillers that really valued the character and interpersonal relationships and became touchstones of that era.”
As for the movie’s title, Carnahan reveals it’s Miami cop shorthand for “ripping it”, aka “taking the bad guy’s stuff. In the event of a seizure of cash or drugs or weapons, the confiscation itself is known as the ‘rip’”.

But, what does its story actually entail? If it wasn’t clear from the above trailer, here’s how Netflix describes the forthcoming flick: “Upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question – including who they can rely on.”
Damon and Affleck aside, The RIP is also set to star Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead, Invincible), Teyana Taylor (Star, Coming 2 America), Sasha Calle (The Flash), Catalina Sandino Moreno (Ballerina), Scott Adkins (John Wick Chapter 4), and Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights, Godzilla: King of the Monsters).
The film’s two main stars are also among its producing team, which includes Kevin Halloran and Michael Joe of Artists Equity. That’s the production company founded by Affleck and Damon in late 2022, which is responsible for recent hits from the duo, such as Air and The Accountant 2.
Will The RIP book a spot on our best Netflix movies list after the turn of the year? Based on its first teaser, I’d be amazed if it doesn’t but, hey, stranger things have happened.
