Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018-2020)

Many characters from the Archie Comics series, including Archie and Jughead, appeared in the CW’s Riverdale. However, Sabrina Spellman (Kieran Shipka) received her own Netflix adaptation of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Unlike the sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Chilling Adventures is a darker, reimagined origin story for Sabrina Spellman.

Sabrina is a half-witch and half-mortal. With her 16th birthday approaching on Halloween, Sabrina must commit to being a witch who serves the Dark Lord Satan. However, Sabrina enjoys her human side, including hanging with friends Harvey (Ross Lynch), Roz (Jaz Sinclair), and Susie (Lachlan Watson). With the dark side calling her, Sabrina must fight to keep both sides happy or risk creating a conflict between good and evil.

The Haunting of Hill House (2018)

The Haunting of Hill House

Before he left for Amazon, Mike Flanagan was “Mr. Horror” for Netflix. Flanagan created five shows for Netflix from 2018 to 2023. His first, The Haunting of Hill House, is arguably his best. Based on Shirley Jackson’s novel, The Haunting of Hill House is split between two timelines. In 1992, Hugh (Timothy Hutton and Henry Thomas) and Olivia Crain (Carla Gugino) and their five children move into a mansion, Hill House, to fix it and flip it for profit.

During their stay, the children notice something strange within Hill House’s walls. It’s a paranormal phenomenon that haunts the family and eventually leads to tragedy. Twenty-six years later, the Crains are forced to confront their fears and revisit what they saw at Hill House. This series is a shining example of Flanagan’s expertise in atmospheric horror.

One of Netflix’s most popular shows is Stranger Things, a supernatural series with sci-fi and coming-of-age elements. The story begins in November 1983 with the kidnapping of Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) in Hawkins, Indiana. No man or woman kidnapped Will; instead, it was a creature from an alternate dimension known as the Upside Down.

Will’s three buddies — Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), and Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) — team up with Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), a psychokinetic girl training in a laboratory, to find their missing friend. By trying to find Will, the group inadvertently creates a link between Hawkins and the Upside Down, inviting a sea of abnormal creatures to wreak havoc on the residents. If you appreciate the Amblin movies from the 1980s, then you’ll love Stranger Things.
