The best streaming services have once again updated their libraries with a bucketload of new movies. Horror fans are going to be very pleased indeed, as I’ve found plenty of classics as well as new arrivals.
Some of my all-time favorites are streaming in March, and there are some exciting new arrivals, too. Whatever horror you’re in the mood for, it’s sure to be at your fingertips over the coming weeks.
HannibalÂ
Watch On
Where: Prime Video (US); rent or buy (UK); Binge (AU)
When: March 1
Hannibal performed very poorly critically compared to its predecessor, The Silence of the Lambs, but I’ve always been a huge fan of the movie. If you like Hannibal Lecter’s character and his disturbing lore, it’s well worth a watch, as it reunites the notorious serial killer with the FBI agent Clarice Starling, who is now disgraced after a botched drug raid.
If you have read Thomas Harris’ novels, be warned that the movie adaptation of Hannibal does deviate from the original story. However, it’s still a solid watch in my books, especially for Gary Oldman’s eerie portrayal of the sadistic Mason Verger, who serves as the antagonist for this installment.
Final Destination
Watch On
Where: HBO Max (US, AU); Prime Video (UK)
When: March 1
HBO Max has added the Final Destination franchise to its lineup in March, including the most recent movie, Final Destination Bloodlines. But I’ve chosen to recommend the first movie that started it all, as you really can’t beat it.
It was the directorial debut of James Wong, and it became such a success that there are now six movies. The first movie follows a group of teenagers who were supposed to be on an aircraft that exploded, but survived after being kicked off. This lucky escape soon turns deadly, though, as Death comes after the survivors, leading to the often very “out there” death scenes the franchise has become known for.
Misery
Watch On
Where: Netflix (US); MGM+ (UK); rent or buy (AU)
When: March 1
Misery is the first of two Stephen King adaptations to arrive on streaming services this month, and it features Kathy Bates in a truly terrifying role. Here, she plays Annie, an obsessive fan of novelist Paul (played by James Caan), whom she ends up rescuing during an accident.
Annie happens to be a nurse, but Paul soon learns his stay at her home is less than restful when she discovers he’s killed off a beloved book character. Annie demands that Paul write a new ending… or else. It’s an excellent adaptation of King’s novel, and a nightmare for any writer out there.
Carrie
Watch On
Where: Prime Video (US); rent or buy (AU, UK)
When: March 1
Brian De Palma’s iconic Carrie is the best adaptation of Stephen King’s first novel, and it’s now streaming on Prime Video in the US. Sissy Spacek delivers an incredible performance as the titular Carrie White, a high schooler who lives with her religiously fanatical mother. When she’s not at home, she is bullied constantly, and she soon hits the breaking point.
After Carrie develops telekinesis, we all know how the story goes, but it doesn’t make it any less horrifying when it happens. It’s a prom scene none of us will forget any time soon.
Bodycam
Watch On
Where: Shudder (worldwide)
When: March 13
At 75 minutes, Bodycam is a short watch, but it packs a mighty punch. Those of you who love found footage won’t want to miss this movie, which follows two police officers as they try to cover up an accidental shooting because they don’t want to be vilified by the public.
Turns out public perception is the least of their worries, and they soon find out that something is watching them. It’s tense and shocking and yes, feels incredibly real indeed.
Saw X
Watch On
Where: Netflix (US); ITVX (UK); rent or buy (AU)
When: March 19
Saw X was a huge surprise, and it is the highest-rated movie in the franchise. With an 81% Rotten Tomatoes score, it has surpassed its predecessors, but perhaps you could argue that we are simply more desensitized to the torture subgenre now.
Set between Saw and Saw II, the movie follows John Kramer as he travels to Mexico in desperation, hoping to cure his cancer. But when he ends up becoming the victim of a medical scam, he sets off to get his brutal revenge on those responsible. It has some of the most cringe-inducing traps in the franchise; it’s sure to make you squirm.
She Loved Blossoms More
Watch On
Where: Shudder (worldwide)
When: March 22
Finally, here’s one for body horror lovers and fans of surrealism. Blending horror, sci-fi, and comedy, She Loved Blossoms More follows three brothers who build a time machine in the hopes they can bring their dead mother back.
But their dad’s increasingly strange demands plunge them into a bad trip, “one fueled by body horror and mind-bending imagery”, according to the official synopsis. This one sounds like it’ll be worth the wait, as it doesn’t arrive until March 22.
