The best free streaming services continue to add some excellent titles, proving that you don’t need to fork out for a subscription to the best streaming services to catch a seriously entertaining movie.
I’ve found a really good mix this week whether you’re in the mood for 80s body horror or a historical drama. You’re sure to find something worth watching out of these five picks.
First Cow (The Roku Channel, Kanopy, Plex)
Watch On
Release date: March 6, 2020
Length: 121 minutes
Director: Kelly Reichardt
Main cast: John Magaro, Orion Lee, Toby Jones, Ewen Bremner, Scott Shepherd
Based on Jonathan Raymond’s novel The Half-Life, First Cow is a must-watch adaptation. The movie is set in 1820 and follows a traveling cook and a Chinese immigrant who start an illicit business using milk stolen from a wealthy trader’s cow.
With a 96% Rotten Tomatoes critical score, this movie has been widely praised by critics who have praised it for its touching storyline and being a fresh take on the classic western.
The Beekeeper (Tubi)
Release date: January 12, 2024
Length: 105 minutes
Director: David Ayer
Main cast: Jason Statham, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Josh Hutcherson, Bobby Naderi, Minnie Driver
Fans of Jason Statham can now watch his recent action movie The Beekeeper for free. Here, he plays a retired government assassin who wants revenge after his kind-hearted landlady falls victim to a phishing scam.
It’s very relevant, given the influx of online scams. A sequel is in the works for next year too so if you liked The Beekeeper, keep an eye out for any buzz around The Beekeeper 2.
The Fly (Tubi)
Watch On
Release date: August 15, 1986
Length: 96 minutes
Director: David Cronenberg
Main cast: Jeff Goldblum, Geena Davis, John Getz, Joy Boushel
Widely regarded as one of the best body horrors of all time, The Fly is a personal favorite of mine. You’ll need a strong stomach for this iconic David Cronenberg movie, but if you’re in the mood to be grossed out, this will work wonders.
Jeff Goldblum plays an eccentric scientist who, slowly turns into a fly-hybrid creature after one of his experiments goes horribly wrong. With an excellent score by Howard Shore too, it’s a horror masterpiece.
Anchorman (Pluto TV)
Watch On
Release date: July 9, 2004
Length: 94 minutes
Director: Adam McKay
Main cast: Will Ferrell, Christina Applegate, Paul Rudd, Steve Carell, David Koechner, Fred Willard
Anchorman is one of those brilliant, quotable comedy movies that’s very re-watchable too. It parodies 1970s culture, especially its Action News format, as it focuses on anchorman Ron Burgundy and those he works with.
As a fan of The Office, I love this movie because Steve Carell, David Koechner and Will Ferrell are always hugely entertaining and I loved all of their characters on the NBC sitcom. The comedy really does benefit from its ensemble cast.
Train to Busan (The Roku Channel)
Watch On
Release date: July 20, 2016
Length: 118 minutes
Director: Yeon Sang-ho
Main cast: Gong Yoo, Jung Yu-mi, Ma Dong-seok, Kim Su-an, Choi Woo-shik
Train to Busan was a huge hit, with the Korean horror movie making a huge $98.5 million at the box office. It’s easy to see why too, as its unique concept about a zombie apocalypse breaking out on a moving train, is incredibly gripping.
Squid Game‘s Gong Yoo leads the cast as a cynical workaholic who travels with his estranged daughter who wants to spend time with her mother in Busan for her birthday. Naturally, their train journey is anything but peaceful.
