My Old Ass (2024)

My Old Ass | Official Trailer

A surprisingly funny, tender comedy, My Old Ass is a recent release that deserves more attention. The film tells the story of a young girl living in rural Canada who is eagerly anticipating the chance to leave home for college. When a mushroom trip gives her a chance to interact with a future version of herself, she begins to realize that the life she’s leading is worth more appreciation than she’s been giving it.

Thanks to an innovative premise, two brilliant central performances from Aubrey Plaza (Agatha All Along) and Maisy Stella, and a surprisingly light sense of humor, the movie avoids feeling overly sentimental. Instead, it feels earnest and sweet, and might leave you welling up if you aren’t careful.

You can watch My Old Ass on Amazon Prime Video.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)

A relatively recent release that is already a coming-of-age movie classic, The Perks of Being a Wallflower follows a shy freshman student who befriends two seniors preparing for adulthood. As he learns more about love and life, he begins to recognize that he has secrets buried in his own past that have to be confronted for him to move forward.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower certainly takes some poetic license, and it might feel a bit pretentious for some, but it has the kind of weightiness that many teenagers feel for the first time as they move toward adulthood.

Bombshell (2019)

Bombshell (2019 Movie) New Trailer — Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie

This partially true story follows three women working at Fox News who slowly come to comprehend the extent to which the entire enterprise is defined by misogyny. As these women start standing up to the men who helped make their career, they begin making headlines themselves.

Bombshell‘s politics are a bit confused, but its central performances from Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Margot Robbie (Barbie) are what make the movie worth watching, along with the makeup work that is genuinely astounding. Bombshell is fun, provocative, and a reminder of the moral compromises that are often required to make a name for yourself.

You can watch Bombshell on Amazon Prime Video.
